EARTH DAY 2020 – in the midst of a pandemic : 22nd April

It took a little invisible virus to upset humans’ routines and lives, making us fearful and sick, changing surrounding environments and giving space to nature while reducing pollution.

We see dolphins, sharks, and other wildlife all over the world approach the coasts more easily but also terrestrial species seem to wander more freely without getting hit by cars along the silent and empty roads.

The air we breath is cleaner and the sound pollution reduced both in air and underwater!

Was this the only way our mother Earth could have been given a breath of fresh air?

This should make us think of how fragile we are and how similar we are to all other species we share this planet with!

Just like us all species suffer and have been suffering of pandemics but we rarely ever notice this.  Just like us they suffer from pollution and rampant, often reckless development, industrialisation and urbanisation, taking away our spaces to reconnect with nature.  We are amazed at the incredible extent of the impacts of this pandemic on us but forget that our planet’s life has been suffering and we are suffering with it too.

BICREF works toward assisting conservation research to make sure that we do not need to wait for a pandemic to help this planet of ours to care.  We start locally on and around our islands by protecting natural environments and the species that dwell there and help to keep all life supporting systems in check.
